This is the central movement of Angel of Light, a cantata based on Shaker themes. A dancing and playful rhythmic ride, it is ideal as a light-hearted opening or closing piece. The text dates from 1844 and is a lively example of a Shaker dance song. The vocal sounds represent a uniquely American form of “mouth music”- a style of traditional singing where nonsense words are used to mimic the sounds of instruments or the rhythms of a dance.

Fred Bock's classic piano solo setting that combined Debussy's Claire de Lune and Bradbury's popular children's song has been a best-seller for over 30 years. How fitting that one of the most popular church composer's living today, Lloyd Larson, would take Fred's idea and bring it to the choir.

The Parting Glass is a traditional Scottish song, often sung as a farewell at the end of a get-together. Sarah Quartel's arrangement features close harmonies, idiomatic Scotch snap rhythms, and effective interjectory moments in what is a largely homophonic setting. The arrangement was made for the composer’s friend Matt Jones, who served with the Canadian Military in Afghanistan in 2010-2011; his deployment and eventual safe return inspired the setting of the piece. With its valedictory message, The Parting Glass would make a fitting end to a performance, perhaps as an encore item.
