Compatible Wind Ensembles: Concert Trios

The 18 works in this flexible trio series offers students from different sections the opportunity to collaborate in ways not always afforded by full ensemble repertoire. It is important that students connect with each other using music of different cultures, different styles, and different composers. Each work was selected for its quality, musical interest, and appropriateness in a chamber setting. Within these trios, there are a variety of developmentally appropriate key signatures, time signatures, and technical levels. Each trio provides unique challenges that as students cooperate, collaborate, and connect with each other while rehearsing, they will see growth in their individual musicianship, become intuitive musicians, and seek out ways to confidently share their music with their communities.

Selected Duets for French Horn

This classic series of duets for like instruments is recognizable to nearly everyone who has ever studied an instrument. The wealth of material supplements musical development and provides a rich experience for growing musicians. Duet playing is often a student's first form of ensemble experience – technique, tone quality, intonation and balance are introduced as students do one of the things they enjoy most – making music with a friend. And duet playing leads easily and naturally to competent performance in larger ensembles. (Vol. I – Easy to Medium, Vol. 2 – Medium to Advanced)

Latin Rhythms

1 Piano, 4 Hands

Latin Rhythms will have audience members dancing in the aisles as students play this fun duet! Perfectly capturing the feel of the greatest Latin dances, this piece dramatically alternates between G major and G minor. The colorful melody, which sings out above syncopated rhythm in 4/4, alternates between parts. Students should take great care to perfect the challenging rhythmic lines to give the piece its proper mood and flair. Performers should also accentuate the articulations for extra effect. Put on your dancing shoes, and take a musical journey to Latin America! A Federation Festivals 2016-2020 selection.

Go for It!

1 Piano, 4 Hands

Go for It! is a fast, rhythmic duet by Robert D. Vandall. The primo and secondo are equal in difficulty, and the quick, syncopated melody is passed back and forth between the two parts. The accompaniment is a simple chordal pattern with staccato harmonic thirds throughout. Accented chords give an extra bite and flair to this fun piece, and even though it is written in 4/4, when played up to speed, it feels like cut time.

Skyscraper

This trio for clarinet, alto saxophone, and piano was commissioned by the Music Teachers National Association to feature and promote collaborative music. It was premiered at the MTNA Conference in 2014. This suite uses triangles (minor 3rds) and squares (perfect 4ths) to formulate melodic movement and harmonic texture. The piece builds the vertical sensation of scaling up and down the building. Listen for a whimsical transition which represents peaceful birds in flight. At the end, the skyscraper stands in all strength and confidence!
