Description
“I grew up in a singing family – a Methodist singing family. Every summer during my childhood, we would travel with my grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins to the Smokey Mountains of N. Carolina to work on building, with our own hands, our family cabin – Here ‘Tis! (every cabin has a name in those parts). And every Sunday we would attend church at the little one room church in Pensacola, NC, where we would sing from the Cokesbury Hymnal. We all sang – in full-throated four part harmony. Even my Dad, who couldn’t carry a tune in a bucket (so the saying goes) would join in as loud as everyone else.
Rejoice! Salvation’s Come! Is my tribute to those special times and the pure joy of singing in harmony with my closest dear ones. The tune is based on The Gate Ajar for Me, hymn #126 in The Cokesbury Worship Hymnal, first published in 1938. I massaged the tune from 6/8 into 9/8 to give it a bit more swing. My good friend, Rev. John A. Dalles, penned a new text, as I felt the original text was just a bit too dated.
It’s my hope that Rejoice! Salvation’s Come! brings you as much joy as I had, singing tenor with my family on those sweet Sunday mornings in the Smokey Mountains.” – Glenn L. Rudolph
