Popularized by the Finnish folk group Varttina, the text of Kiiriminna tells of carefree young people, always cheerful despite life’s troubles. They wander in search of love, shrugging off heartbreak with humour and reminding us not to let sorrow weigh us down.

This upbeat melody has a quirky twist: the melody never lands on the third of the scale. Often sung in minor, it can also be heard in the brighter Mixolydian mode, giving the composer and the performers the chance to play with many colors and adding extra bounce to its step.
