Description

This fiery setting if Job 3:13-14 was composed for a program about nightmares and dreams. I was introduced to this text through a setting by Francisco Lopez Capillas, a prominent 17th century Mexican composer. Following a boisterous, fanfare-like opening, the voices exchange foreground melodies for background rhythmic cells above a pulsing piano part. After a furious climax the piece dissipates quickly like a bad dream.

Amidst thoughts from visions of the night, when deep sleep falls on mortals, dread came upon me, and trembling, which made all my bones shake. Job 3:13-14
