Description
Sometimes referred to as “the Bach Double” or the “Double Violin Concerto”, Bach composed his Concerto for Two Violins in D minor, BWV 1043, around 1730. The concerto was created to be part of a concert series Bach ran as the Director of the Collegium Musicum in Leipzig.
The solo parts of this wonderful Double Concerto for two violins and orchestra survive in a faultless fair copy by Bach that was made around 1730. The slow movement is regarded as a melodic high point of the composer's output. With the two solo violins on an equal footing, the concerto amply deserves its position as one of Bach's most often-played and popular works.
The concerto comprises three movements:
- Vivace in D minor
- Largo ma non tanto in F Major
- Allegro
