The Hal Leonard Dulcimer Method is designed for anyone just learning to play the mountain (Appalachian) dulcimer, but is equally useful to the intermediate player. This comprehensive and easy-to-use guide includes many techniques, tips, and fun songs to learn and play. The accompanying audio contains 54 tracks of traditional songs for demonstration and play along. Completely re-edited, this second edition features more songs, new photos and brand new demonstration recordings. The audio is accessed online using the unique code inside each book and can be streamed or downloaded. The audio files include PLAYBACK+, a multi-functional audio player that allows you to slow down audio without changing pitch, set loop points, change keys, and pan left or right.

Dulcimer a La Mode takes the mystery out of modal tuning and playing for the mountain dulcimer player by presenting four common tunings (DAA, DAG, DAD, and DAC) with instructions for tuning, finding the scales and chords, and learning traditional tunes in each of the four modes. This book will encourage players to re-tune their instrument and learn more of its versatility. Each tune is presented as a melody with a drone in the mode indicated with strumming and rhythm guides. For most tunes, an optional arrangement or accompaniment is also provided using more complex chords and reflecting more traditional Western harmony. As a further learning tool, the accompanying audio allows the listener to play along with the song as presented in the book. Includes access to online audio.

The dulcimer is a unique instrument in many ways, with the modal layout of the fretboard prime among them. Early in its days in the Appalachian Mountains players would retune a string, bringing the dulcimer from major to minor and other modes. Today's players work in different tunings also, and this book shows why and how all of this happens.
Music is a language that comes from the soul rather than solely from the dots and lines. However, the dots and lines have their own stories. Learn where the notes fall on the fretboard and how they fit into the modes most dulcimer players know: Ionian/Major, Aeolian/Minor, Mixolydian and Dorian. Scale variations, pentatonic and hexatonic, are also outlined. Fifteen songs and tunes are written in musical notation as well as dulcimer tablature. Includes access to online audio with the tunings and count-offs, enabling one to play all of the songs in the book along with the recording.
